Accessible Transportation for All

State Mobility Manager

About Teri Palmer

My career in the transportation field started when I joined the military in the 90’s. As a Heavy Wheel Vehicle Mechanic in the Army, I quickly learned how important vehicle inventory was to completing a mission. After 4 years as a mechanic I moved into a role where I needed to track drivers, and inventory for missions. Training came natural to me, and I found myself training soldiers on preventative maintenance, and other topics daily. This experience led to my career in retail management, working my way up to district management, where I trained retail management, and workers all aspects of the retail field. From there I spent time working as a Correctional Officer, Police Dispatcher, and Bank Branch Manager. All of these careers had a training role to them. I was reintroduced to transportation about 5 years ago. I was chosen to operate a small rural transportation agency here in New Hampshire. The agency operated 3 fixed routes, an on-demand route, and a volunteer driver program. What I didn’t realize was that every day I was providing mobility management to our residents. In the director position I was able to work with partners and stakeholders finding the best transportation option for our riders. I am very fortunate that I am able to work as the Statewide Mobility Manager for the State of New Hampshire. Working closely with NH Department of Transportation, and the members of the State Coordinating Council ensuring that the residents of New Hampshire have options for transportation is an extremely rewarding career to have when we can make the connections.

What is Mobility Management?

Mobility management is connecting people to the transportation options that can best get them to their destinations. Mobility managers also work across sectors with partners to understand people’s transportation needs and together create new or expand existing services that respond to those needs.

Mobility managers need to stay informed about existing community transportation services, sharing this knowledge with customers attending outreach events, and partner meetings. They assist with articulating and advocating for transportation options with stakeholders in their regions to continuously improve transportation, no matter the mode.

Mobility managers cultivate partnerships and collaborate efforts that include transportation providers, planners and many other community stakeholders. They also assist with innovative, customized regional transportation solutions that would best suit customers in their regions.
